When the practices related to the medical profession of eye and the written works of art are investigated during the history, the fact that the medical profession of eye is one of the first areas of medical specialty can be told. Although the subjects about eye diseases are present in the content of Turkish and Arabic medical books written in the period of Ottoman Empire, especially Şirvanlı Muhammed bin Mahmut’s Mürşid as an original book of ophthalmology written in this period attracts attention. 150 years after the writing of this book, Ophthalmodouleia, which is the book known as first book of ophthalmologic surgery and is written in modern languages in Europe, was written by Georg Bartisch accepted as the father of modern medical profession of eye. Although Şirvani and Bartisch have lived in quite different times and cultures, it is seen that the books they wrote have interesting similarities and differences. Keywords: History of 15th and 16th century; ophthalmology; ophthalmologic surgeryTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2007, 15:57-62
