aDeontoloji AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Opening and operating processes of Ovacik Gold Mine in Bergama have been in the public agenda with its economical, political, social and environmental dimensions, since 1989, the date the mining corporation got the license. This process, which has become a focus of interest for media because of the opposition of settlers from nearby villages and demonstrations made by them in this respect, had been deliberated regarding the villagers’ health conditions and conflicting views and reports upon the affects of the mine on the community have been created. Although, basically, deliberations have focused on the right to live in a healthy environment and protecting it, they also have been conducted in regard with social dimensions such as people living in the region having the right to keep the initiative on their own lives for themselves. When considered from the point of history of medicine, it is important to assess the reactions of physicians, one of whose professional responsibilities is to protect public health and the other of which is to suggest policies for promoting healthcare environment. The aim of this study is to assess the activities of Turkish Medical Association (TMA), which is the organization, hence the representative institution of all physicians in Turkey, and discuss the reasons beneath so-called activities. Keywords: Physicians, association, physician’s role, environment and public health, goldTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2006, 14:150-154
