aEczacılık İşletmeciliği AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Eczacılık Fakültesi, bSerbest, ANKARA Theriac had been used against scorpion and snake poison in ancient times and it didn’t lose its value as a heal-all drug over the centuries.
Theriac had an important place in Islamic Medicine in the Middle Ages. It was mentioned as a very useful drug in the “Canon” of Avicenna (980-1037). Different prescriptions of theriac can be found in the books which had been written in Seljuk and Ottoman Empire periods. Theriacs were also mentioned in Mücerreb-nâme. The book Mücerreb-nâme was written by the famous physician Sherefeddin Sabuncuoğlu (1386-after 1468), and it includes a list of useful compounds which had been experimented and approved by Sabuncuoğlu himself. In this book, Sabuncuoğlu discusses the effects and usages of theriacs one by one, and states the positive and negative effects which may be seen during the therapy.
The current form of theriac is the “Mesir Paste”, which is served to the public at the festivals in Manisa.
In this study, the drug content of theriac compounds, which had been given in Mücerreb-nâme by Sabuncuoğlu, will be analyzed and discussed in various perspectives under the light of the current literature. Keywords: Antidotes, history, 15th centuryTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2006, 14:145-149
