aDeontoloji ve Tıp Tarihi AD, İstanbul Üniversitesi İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Organ transplantation brings along legal, religious and ethical problems as well as medical ones. Various ethical viewpoints can be pointed out:
1 Transplantation from a Living Organism and Ethics
The body rejects a foreign organ because of immunological reactions. The initial kidney transplant made in 1954-56 was genidentic, that is isogenetic.
a. The transplantation of a vital organ from a living organism is abandoned because it is contraversial to principle “Primum non nocere” which means the physician must not affect a healthy organ.
b. Another drawback for transplanting from a living organism is as follows: The family may have a psychological role in the decision of the donor, even though he or she donates on his own free will. In addition, the receiver will feel thankful all through out his or her life to the donor.
c. The third drawback is that the donor will have to live with a single organ. Someone with three kidneys can donate, but this is extremely rare. Keywords: Medical ethics, organ transplantationTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 1993,1:35-52
