According to the Hippocratic Oath, the physician’s obligations to patients represent philanthropy. After an idea of person or patient has been changed, it has become difficult to find clear commitments to the traditional beneficence model in contemporary biomedical ethics.
The primary goal of health-care in general is to maximize each patient’s well-being, and the physician’s primary obligations is to provide medical benefits. The central problem in this issues is whether the principle of respect for autonomy that gives primary decision-making autority to patients should have priority in medical practice over the principle of beneficence that givers autority to providers to implement sound principles of health-care.Keywords: Medical ethics, beneficence, the principle of beneficence, non-maleficence, obligations of beneficenceTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 1994,2:57-60
