Folk Medicine Practice In Anatolia
Dr. Sevgi ŞARa
aEczacılık İşletmeciliği AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Eczacılık Fakültesi, ANKARA Anatolia is a piece of land where numerous populations settled and established civilizations beginning from antiquity and therefore owns a cultural treasure. An important part of this treasure is composed of folk medicine and folk remedies. “Irvasalama”, “parpılama” and “therapy with ems” and “fracture-dislocation therapy” are main methods of folk medicine in Anatolia where folk medicine practices are common. “Ocaklı”, “şeyh”, “hoca”, “okuyucu”, “üfürükçü”, “izinli” and “orumçu” are main practitioners of folk medicine in Anatolia. Folk remedies are empiric agents coming from past to present as a result of long experiences and it is evident that folk medicine is used in Anatolia widely among people generally in rural areas through rational or macic-religious methods.
In this study, a definition of folk medicine is given and how and by whom these treatments are practiced in folk medicine are explained. Keywords: Folk medicine, folk medicine practice, anatoliaTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2005, 13:131-136
