Cauterization As Applied In Şanliurfa Region

It is known that cauterization has been used for treatment pur-poses. The most ancient examples of this application were seen Mid-dle Asian, Chinese and Indian Medicine. It was also used in Ancient Greek and Arabic-Islamic Medicine. The practice of cauterization for medical purposes is seen in different regions of Anatolia.
In this study, we have searched the practice of cauterization in Sanliurfa region by interviewing with 2 practitioner and many people who visit them. We have observed that cauterization method used in this region is different than “classical” cauterization and more like to “moksa” of Fareast Asia.
We hope that our study will help both to understand the mental-ity of traditional medicine and to demonstrate good and bad sides of the application of cauterization.Keywords: Traditional treatments; cauterization; SanliurfaTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2005, 13:110-114
