The Emphatic Tendency Of Physicians Employing In Health, Application And Research Center (suam) Of UludaĞ University

Therefore, emphatic communication is essential for the conduct of the health-care services. The objective of this study is to determine the emphatic tendency level of the specialists/residents employed in Application and Research Center of Uludağ University and to find out whether they differ from each other regarding their demographic characteristics, profession and self-evaluation.
Material and Methods: The study group comprised 307 physicians employed in Health, Application and Research Center (SUAM) of Uludağ University as specialist or resident. In the trial, Emphatic Tendency Scale (5-point Likert type) developed by Dökmen (1988) was used. Material analysis was made for the reliability assessment of the Empathic Tendency Scale. Data were analyzed according the statistical module of SPSS for Windows Ver.11.0.
Results: The mean emphatic tendency of the physicians were 69.26. Emphatic tendency of the women, married, those who choose their profession intentionally, those who perceive themselves as self-starter or bold, those who express their feelings easily, those who would choose again their profession if they have had the opportunity to turn to the past, those who think they can use their professional knowledge and skills efficiently, was found significantly higher.
Conclusion: Trainings should be organized in order to enhance the emphatic communication skills of the physicians.Keywords: Physicians, communication, emphatic tendency, professional knowledgeTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2005, 13:97-104
