The Professional Satisfaction Of Nurses Employing In Health, Application And Research Center (suam) Of UludaĞ University

Objective: Professional satisfaction is essential for the efficacy and efficiency of the services given by the health-care professionals. This study was conducted to determine the professional satisfaction level of the nurses employed in Uludağ University, Health Application and Research Center and to find out whether they differ from each other by demographic characteristics, profession or self-evaluation.
Material and Methods: The study group comprised of 399 nurses who are employed in Uludağ University, Health Application and Research Center since 6 months as of the time interval of 25th May-8 June of 2004 and who answered Professional Satisfaction Scale completely. In the study, Professional Satisfaction Scale (5-point Likert type) developed by Musal et al. utilizing from the studies conducted regarding similar issues and Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale. Material analysis was made for the reliability assessment of the Musal’s Professional Satisfaction Scale. Data were analyzed according the statistical module of SPSS for Windows Ver.11.0.
Results: The mean score of the nurses according to professional satisfaction scale was estimated as 4.31. 68.4% of the nurses have low-level professional satisfaction. In our study, the determinants for the professional satisfaction was found as the age of the nurse, whether she can apply her professional knowledge or not and whether she would change her choice of profession if she have had an opportunity for it.
Conclusion: Our findings showed that the nurses employed in SUAM have low-level professional satisfaction. Every attempt of the SUAM managers to increase the low-level professional satisfaction of the nurses and every step taken for it will increase the quality of the heath-care services provided by SUAM.
