Purpose: The aim of this research is to study the knowledge levels of residentt and interns on patient’s rights in the Medical School of Karadeniz Technical University.
Materials and Methods: The questionnaire for measuring knowledge on patient’s rights was applied to 184 out of 211 residents and 114 out of 122 interns, during April-May 2004. Forms were collected after an hour. The questions were in two categories. The ones that questioned knowledge levels on patient’s rights were graded as 10 points (Cronbach alfa= 0.54). The others, which focused on the attitude of assistant doctors towards their patients, were evaluated according to Lichert scale (total of 36 points). Data was analysed with Student’s t test and correlation analysis.
Results: The mean knowledge level of residents was 6.04  2.10, which of interns was 5.80  1,96 and there was no significant differences between those (p= 0.142). Low level correlation exists between the knowledge level score and the duration of assistant doctors (r= 0.15, p= 0.033). The highest correct responses in both groups regarding patient’s rights were about “taking to take permission prior to any medical treatment” (87.4% of residents, 84.2% of interns). The lowest correct response rate was on “the respect to humanly values and visitors and accompainment of the patients” (9.3% of assistant doctors, 2.6% of interns). The residents score on attitudes toward their patients was found 22.7  4.4 and it seems that there was no statistical correlation between this score and time spent in residency (r= 0.04, p= 0.164).
Conclusion: The knowledge level of residents and interns are found to be average levels on patient’s rights. Although there seems to be some correlation between times spent in residency knowledge levels, this is not reflected to their attitude.
