Soranus Of Ephesus And His Work,

Soranus was born in Ephesus (98-138). Soranus studied in Alexandria and eventually moved to Rome, where he practised medicine. He authored close to many works on topics ranging from internal medicine to surgery. He practiced medicine in Rome during the rule of Trajan and Hadrian. About 20 books have been ascribed to Soranus, the most important being Gynecology. His treatise on the diseases of women remained an influential work until a long time.In the second century AD, Soranus of Ephesus described a method of assessing the health status of newborns that very much resembles today's Apgar score.This article focuses on issues such as the female reproductive system, abortion, birth control, menstruation, histery and vaginal speculum, as told in Soranus' Gynecology.Keywords: Soranus, Gynecology, Pregnancy, Vagınal Speculum, PicaTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2004, 12:196-200
