Dr. Adnan ATAÇ,a Dr. Tolga GÜVEN,a Dr. Remzi GÜLSOYa
aTıp Tarihi ve Deontoloji AD, Gülhane Askeri Tıp Akademisi, ANKARA When a caesarean intervention is refused, several problems that interest medical ethics emerge since both the pregnant woman and the fetus can be affected as a result of such a decision. Between the woman's autonomy, together with the inviolability of her body and the fetus' rights are the first of these problems. The competency of the patient is also questioned in this context, and an enforced caesarean section by a court order is also performed in some cases.
Refusal of a caesarean section is discussed in different contexts as well. According to the principle of justice, it is suggested that if the fetus has a right to be protected from harm, then an ideal society where members share the obligations to protect the fetus is required. On the other hand, the principle of respect for professional integrity requires physicians to adhere to high standards of scientific competence. Keywords: Caesarean, justice, autonomyTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2004, 12:270-273
