Aloe vera is a plant which has long been known for its medicinal properties. It has been tested and used as a drug since ancient times. This old natural remedy is rediscovered today. New methods of cultivation and new application methods are developed recently. Various references in the media helped the plant's current popularity. In this article we present Ibnu'l Baytar's experiences regarding this plant. Ibnu'l Baytar is a famous Islamic botanist of the 13th century who knew the plant well and commented on it. His most important work is "el-müfredat el-cami", in which there is a chapter on aloe vera, where Ibnu'l Baytar first presents all the historical data about the medicinal properties of the plant and then adds his own comments and experiences. According to his experiments, the juice of aloe vera leaves quickly heals wounds, ulcers and burns, by forming a protective shield over them. He also comments on the laxative property of the plant and its use against constipation. Keywords: Ibnu'l Baytar, aloe vera, treatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2004, 12:274-278
