The Maltepe Military Hospital

*Doç.Dr., İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp Fakültesi Deontoloji AD, İSTANBUL The Maltepe Military Hospital was established during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II upon the proposal of the Chief-physician, Mustafa Behçet Efendi. The hospital which was named as "Asakir-i Mansure Hastanesi" (the Military Hospital) was also used as a military school and barracks. It is a 600-bed capacity hospital with four sides and a big courtyard in the middle.The hospital was used as a quarantine site during the cholera breakout in Istanbul in 1831. The hospital increased its level of quality during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II and became the biggest hospital of Istanbul.It partially rendered service as an Infection Diseases Hospital during the World War I and even continued its activities for a while during the occupation of Istanbul but was dissolved in 1922.In this article, the personnel of the hospital, the salaries, its patients, treatment services, the water supply, vehicles, printing house, pharmacy, the system of supervision and the visit of Sultan Abdulmecit are explained by taking the archive documents into consideration.Keywords: Maltepe Military Hospital, IstanbulTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics-Hukuku-Tarihi 2003, 11:108-115
