The History Of Syphilis

* Uz.Dr., Uludağ University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Dermatology,** Prof.Dr., Uludağ University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Dermatology, Bursa, TURKEY Syphilis, a disease of still obscure origin, has not only been a medical problem with various clinical presentations but also affected the history and evolution of human in social, cultural and moral aspects. Because syphilis is largely transmitted through sexual activity, in particular illicit sexual activity, it is believed to carry an enourmous moral stigma. The attempts for the controlling the spread of this disease promote the first declaration of the contagious disease prevention acts and the researches for the cure of syphilis opened the first page of the antibiotic era.In this review, we discuss the history of syphilis in the world and in Turkey as well as its social and moral affects.Keywords: Syphilis, History, EpidemicsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics 2002, 10:139-143
