By the way, secular medicine also had its foundations around those sanctuaries; such as Hippocrates was born in Cos, where one of the most famous Asclepions of the antiquity was found. Over time, medicine as a practice of both a profession and art was carried out at the physicians' own houses or the physicians were visiting the patients at their homes. In most of the cities, there were private offices ? iatreion or tabernae medicae- of the public phyisicians. As far as it is known, military hospitals ? valetudinarium- were initially established during the reign of Augustus for the medical care of the Roman legions. However, the first civilian hospital of the world was set up by St. Basil the Great in Caesarea (today Kayseri) at Cappadocia around 375 BC.Keywords: Asclepius, Asclepion, Valetudinarium, Nosocomeion, HospitalTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics-Hukuku-Tarihi 2002, 10:279-284
