The fact that there is no special training for medical representation and the medical representatives are paid more than an average physicians, make this profession more attractive. This study was conducted between January and February in 2002 in order to study and evaluate the socio-demographic characteristics of the persons working as medical representatives in charge in the city of Elazığ and surroundings and the ethical problems which they faced and experienced in their relations with the physicians. A questionnaire consisting of 21 items related with the relations between medical representatives in charge and their relations with the physicians and their perceptions to the job was applied. The number of medical representatives in charge was a few in general but because it was sufficient for the region, the regional part of study was of significant. The 90.9 % of the medical representatives in charge who answered the questionnaire were male, their average age mean was 30.9 ± 3.8 years, and their seniority mean in the job was 5.36 ± 4.12 years. In the study, it was found that the medical representatives visited the general practitioners more than specialist physicians, they limited their visits in order not to violate patients rights but, anyway, they though that they violated patients' rights in their visits, they experienced some problems in their relations with the physicians, and the most outstanding of those problems were ethical problems which came out with paramedical demands. In conclusion, there are ethical problems to a great extend in relations between medical representatives and physicians. Some arrangements to overcome these problems should be done. Especially there should be a standard in the expenses of promotions and its supervision is a vital problem for the state. Keywords: Physician, Medical representatives, Medical ethicsTurkiye Klinikleri J Med Ethics-Hukuku-Tarihi 2002, 10:296-301
